Creative Friends and Norman Cornish

Equal Arts is a leading creative ageing charity supporting older people and those living with dementia in Gateshead, Newcastle and across the UK.

One of their projects, Creative Friends, brings individuals together in a gallery or cultural setting, for an afternoon. People have an opportunity to chat over tea and cake and explore an art based theme.

The groups has recently been looking at the work of Norman Cornish and reading his autobiography ‘A slice of life’. Having enjoyed hearing about his life and looking through the published books of his works they went onto explore using charcoal to draw in the style of Cornish. Their oldest member Tommy, who is 94 and has very limited vision, loved studying his work and sketching.

Recently the Creative Friends group visited The Bowes Museum to see the amazing exhibition of Norman's work. It was wonderful to see the actual works so wonderfully curated.
